At Natural Aptitude, we believe in the power of collaboration to drive meaningful change. And recently, we’ve witnessed this first-hand with the incredible response to our UKHab survey.
Thank you to everyone who took the time to complete our questionnaire. Your valuable feedback will be instrumental in shaping the future of UKHab symbology.
Your Voice, Your Impact
As many of you know, a recent LinkedIn discussion regarding the colour scheme of a UKHab symbology coded habitat image brought to a head some of the issues around the current symbology. This sparked a nice initiative by UKHab.org to officially run an open competition focused on improving their symbology.
This proactive approach exemplifies the power of community engagement. Your responses to our survey on the main issues you face will directly feed into that. We received nearly 70 responses and it’s been incredibly insightful to analyse all the feedback.
Sharing the Results and Driving Change
We have shared the long-form results of our survey with UKHab.org and this comprehensive data will play a crucial role in informing the upcoming competition to design the new symbology.
To provide a quick snapshot of the key takeaways, we’ve compiled a couple of graphics highlighting the main pain points raised to date:

Key Pain Points Summary
While colour and pattern are primary concerns, the survey reveals a wider demand for standardised symbology and closer alignment with Phase 1 symbology and BNG assessments. Urban habitats present particular problems, as do missing symbology for habitats such as hedgerow types.
These insights, along with the more detailed feedback we’ll be sharing with UKHab.org, will help to shape the symbology to be more user-friendly, accessible, and effective for everyone.
A Collaborative Future
We are pleased to be part of this collaborative effort to improve the UKHab symbology. Working together, we can create a system that better serves the ecological community and promotes a deeper understanding of our natural environment.
Thank you again to everyone who has contributed so far. Your participation will make a real difference.
Stay tuned for updates as the UKHab symbology competition progresses. We’ll continue to keep you informed on how your feedback is being used to shape the future of the UKHab symbology.
