The Species Recovery Trust (SRT), a charity dedicated to saving the UK’s rarest species from extinction, has adopted Coreo as its essential field data collection platform across its 1,200 conservation sites.
With the crucial goal of removing 50 species from the edge of extinction by 2050, the SRT relies on a network of dedicated conservation officers and volunteers. However, their previous data collection systems were difficult for volunteers to use and created time-consuming data management problems.
Volunteer Empowerment
Coreo provided the robust, customisable digital solution the SRT needed. Working closely with Director Dominic Price, the Natural Apptitude team developed a bespoke survey that allows users to instantly add new observation records to existing site data, streamlining their monitoring process.

The key results have been immediate and powerful:
- Volunteer Retention: The app’s intuitive design has been vital in removing technical barriers, allowing all volunteers, regardless of experience, to contribute high-quality data.
- Pinpoint Accuracy: Coreo enables officers and volunteers to locate exact observation points quickly – a critical feature when searching for extremely rare plants in featureless locations like the New Forest bog.
Dominic Price highlights the transformative impact:
“Data underpins everything and having that data in your hand when you are on site is brilliant. It enables you to review and plan whilst on site which is much more powerful than having to do this retrospectively back in the office.”
This improved workflow and data integrity allow the SRT team to maximize their time in the field, dedicating more resources to action and less to administration.
